I am seeing this behavior using 0.53 and Astraweb , I have 20 connections set (which I am allowed), yet downloading starts then the warnings screen fills up with maximum connections exceeded. I have tried SSL and non SSL connections to Astraweb. I have the Options -> Switches -> Disconnect on Empty Queue: turned On.

Just tried it and there is a problem with the .eu server farm I suggest you try using either ssl-us.astraweb.com or ssl.astraweb.com Ports 443 or 563. The 200 Mbit/s cable connection is maxed out with just 5 connections. There are plenty of ways connecting to Astraweb servers, if your ISP throttles (traffic shaping) Usenet you can circumvent this by using different ports or SSL encryption.
